double tagged...

I have been tagged by Lindsey and Shaka, so here it is...

Where did you meet your husband?

We met in Mrs. Connor's second grade class. No, we weren't a couple but we knew each other. We went through elementary school together and he was actually my best friend's "boyfriend" when we were in sixth grade!

What was the first thing you said to your husband?

I honestly have no recollection... probably something about boys having cooties! Just kidding...

Where was the first kiss? First date?

Well, the first kiss was on our first date. He asked me to the junior prom and kissed me while we were hanging out of the moonroof of the limo. History from there. Ahh, sixteen...

Did you have a long or short courtship/engagement?

Well, we were sixteen... hmmm, so we got married that summer! No, really... we were a couple through senior year in high school and then he was snatched away from me to go to King's Point, The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, for college. I couldn't see him much while he was there but we swore our undying love and wrote, called and visited each other whenever possible. I was busy working and going to college and we both looked forward to his graduation and being able to spend lots of time together. That didn't happen since he received a job offer for a cruise line in Hawaii the day after graduation and left the following day. I continued working and going to school and he worked eighty hour weeks for months at a time as an engineer for the cruise line. He came home for Christmas and popped the question and we were married a year and a half later! Our wedding day was seven years and twenty-one days after our first date... so, I'd say it was a long courtship!

Where did you get engaged?

He was home from Hawaii for a couple of weeks and we made plans to go into NYC to see a show, shop and have dinner. I still don't know how he kept it a secret and I didn't catch on. He's not good at secrets and there were lots of clues that I missed. We saw Phantom of the Opera and went to Sardi's for dinner. When it came time to order dessert he couldn't make up his mind what he wanted so I told him what to get (I'm bossy like that and I wanted to try two different desserts). Then I said, "See, aren't you lucky that you have me?!" He teared up and dropped to one knee and asked the big question. I laughed and laughed and eventually said "yes!" (I thought he already knew the answer). I was in complete shock and didn't even eat my caramel flan or sample the dessert I'd ordered for him. However, I still insisted we continue our plans to go shopping... he'll never let me live that down! I think he was exhausted from all the anticipation and thought he'd dodged the shopping bullet with a sparkly diamond ring. I was a girl in the city and shopping was on the agenda! We did eventually make our way home to announce the big news!

Where did you get married?

We got married on May 27th in the Mariner's Chapel at King's Point. The chapel is lovely... simple and elegant. The campus is beautiful, formerly the Chrysler estate, it overlooks Long Island's north shore. We had the campus to ourselves since it was a holiday weekend. There was a sailboat regatta down on the water that day and the weather was perfect... so pretty.

How did the reception go?

I couldn't have asked for a better day. It was everything I had imagined and more. The reception was held at the Officer's Club, Melville Hall. The food was fabulous and we danced the night away with a spectacular view across the water of the GW Bridge and Throg's Neck bridge lit up against the backdrop of NYC. We had so much fun that we stayed until the very end rather than making the planned grand exit!

How was the honeymoon?

We spent the first couple nights relaxing in Long Island at The Inn at Great Neck a beautiful, new hotel that had just opened. I think we were the first people to stay in our room! Then we headed off to Bermuda where we stayed at Elbow Beach. It was a dream come true... pink sand, clear water, spectacular weather, amazing food, riding all over the island on the back of a moped with my sweetie. Ahh, heaven. We promised ourselves that we would return, but alas we haven't yet. Writing this brings it all back, I had almost forgotten... WE. MUST. RETURN!

Wow, that was fun. So many memories that I haven't really thought about in a while. Hmm... gotta go talk to The Husband : )

Let's see, Lindsey and Shaka have tagged just about everyone that I was going to. Let's see if April, Applecado, Gab, Kage and Calie will do it! Whoever else is out there reading, consider yourself tagged, too! Drop a line in the comments... I'd love to hear your story!
