I love fun little backpacks for the toddler set. Make them carry their own accoutrement once they're out of the full-on diaper bag stage. A pack of wet wipes, a pull-up or two, some crayons, a snack... good to go! They love the "responsibility," especially if it's got a fun face like these ones!
These are adorable. We just entered the backpack stage and it's full of everything you just mentioned!
