a bicycle for princess... redux

Okay, let's try this again...

It is time to buy Princess a new bicycle. Up to now she's been the fortunate recipient of hand-me-down bicycles from her cousins. This has been wonderful but I'm excited to choose one for her myself. She will, of course, have some input. I just won't let her see the Disney princess bikes or the ones with glittery gadgets aplenty. Not that there's anything wrong with those, but something a tad more classic is what I have in mind, something that would be apropos with a little wicker basket attached.

A classic like the sweet little violet one shown above. This is the front runner. It's a brand that I recognize (Raleigh) and I found a bike shop that carries it for a decent price.

When I first began this search I couldn't find any of these classic styles. I googled "retro girls bikes" and other variations with very little success. Who knew they had their own genre. They are called "beach cruisers." Here in New England I did not know this, apparently they're pretty popular on the west coast. Once I learned this I found LOTS of pretty little bicycles. Here are some of the other ones in the running...

A fun orange number, it comes in lots of other yummy colors, too!

Check out this cutie in blue... or purple or pink or...

And how about this beauty called Rosie... (sooo pretty)!

I'm almost done... just a couple more. Had to show you this Hello Kitty one. Typically we don't do character motifs 'round here but occasionally Hello Kitty pops up. Nostalgia for me. Who didn't love those tiny Hello Kitty stationery sets when they were little girls in the 80's? Oh and check it out... the tires even have Hello Kitty treads. Believe it or not, Target carries it, too! I first read about it here.

Okay, that's it. Check out the links to see all the cute stuff I didn't post.

Here's another one just for fun. Flashbacks from the 70's. Didn't you have a bicycle like this, too? Banana seat and all... well actually I'd have to add a white plastic basket on the front with brightly colored plastic daisies attached and then some sparkly metallic streamers for the handlebars... ahh, memories.

Hello,

I am looking for a new bicycle for my daughter too and found your post to be extremely helpful. The bikes you found were very nice looking. However, can you tell me if any of them comes in the adult size of 26"? You also mentioned a store that carries the first violet Raleigh at a decent price. May I know the name and address of the store? Thank you.

Hi Nikki,

Not sure if you'll check back here for my response but I wasn't sure where else to get in touch with you.

My bicycle search was last year so I don't know if my answer will help you now or not. The website that I found the bike at for a decent price was Harris Cyclery in Boston. I don't believe that they ship bikes though.

The link for the Raleigh children's bike that I mentioned is no longer active but here's a link to Raleigh's US website where they may have 26" bikes in the Beach Cruiser style. The website has a "Find a Dealer" section that might help you find a bike store in your area that carries what you're looking for.

Also if you google "Beach Cruiser 26 inch," I'm sure you'll find some options. Here's a site that I came across with that search that carries a Firmstrong 26" Beach Cruiser in lots of colors. I can't recommend the site as I've never used it but it's an option. Larger Beach Cruisers (20" and up) seem to be much easier to find than the smaller ones. Hope that helps!

Good luck!

Nikki,

Oops that link to Raleigh's US website kind of went wonky. Here's a link specifically to their Cruisers

Manually submit your site to Google. If you’d prefer to wait, Yahoo could at some point spider your site and return it in look outcome genres connected to your site identify and keywords.Nonetheless, this may take some time.
